We are looking for a Product Safety Compliance Engineer to join our Hawthorne Gardening team in Vancouver, Washington. The chosen candidate will support the product safety and compliance for products for Hydroponic indoor gardening including high intensity grow lights, environmental controllers, fans, pumps, humidifiers, and irrigation equipment.  In order to fulfill the job requirements, applicants should be:

  • Familiar with compliance agencies and their application processes for EMC testing, safety testing, and performance testing. This includes evaluations to the EMC directive, FCC Parts 15 and 18, the LV directive, and the CSA and UL Standards, for acquiring CB, CE, and North American Listing/Certification.

  • Familiar with the UL and CSA safety standards, and the IEC/EN standards associated with the EMC directive and LV directive, for [horticultural] luminaires and controllers.

  • Familiar with all the required product markings, required manual content and required packing markings.

  • Familiar with the basic equipment needed to evaluate products to the applicable safety and performance standards so as to develop or operate a small laboratory to conduct preliminary testing before submission of products for DLC and NRTL Listing/Certification. 

  • Able to recognize constructions that are likely to comply with or not comply with the EMC and/or safety requirements. Must be involved in the design of the product from the beginning. Able to suggest design changes to better ensure compliance.

  • Able to create a compliance program for preliminary product evaluation to better ensure compliance.

Key Work Performed:

  • Work collaboratively with the Product Lifecycle Management (PLM) process including; R&D, procurement, category, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure products become and stay compliant.

  • Identify areas of concern/high risk and address those with the R&D, category, and procurement teams.

  • Review designs to ensure the ability to achieve appropriate certifications.

  • Ensure that our products are successfully validated for use domestically and internationally.

  • Execute pre-tests cooperatively with test labs on product samples.

  • Work cooperatively with inside and outside test lab(s) to set up, execute and monitor certification/validation tests.

  • Submit and negotiate documentation packages and requirements with UL,  ETL, etc. to meet certification requirements for electrical products.

  • Follow all ETL laboratory testing, maintenance, and evaluation processes in order to maintain our Intertek Satellite accreditation.

  • Interface with UL, ETL, ISO, CSA, QAI, and other 3rd party inspectors during their audits and follow-ups.

  • Aid engineering in the interpretation of UL, CSA, FCC, EN/IEC, and DLC requirements.

  • Work to ensure that all departments are in compliance with all applicable Federal, State, and industry laws, regulations, and standards.

  • Confer with management staff to identify and correct potential areas of non-compliance and anticipate future compliance requirements.

  • Remain abreast of laws and regulations that might affect the organization's policies and procedures and affect products’ certifications.

  • Give notification regarding any necessary revisions of policies and procedures or revisions of product constructions/markings. 

  • Prepare reports for management.

  • Ensure issues and/or concerns are identified, investigated, and resolved.

  • Help build and train the compliance team for future advancement.

Qualifications, Education, and Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.

  • 3+ years experience with Product Safety Compliance.

  • 3+ years preferred experience with manufacturing.

  • Demonstrated success in quality/compliance engineering, statistical problem solving, and decision-making.

  • Ability to technically assess situations and proactively advise on solutions.

  • Strong in failure analysis, test method validation, engineering tolerances, and statistics

  • Demonstrated ability to lead, direct and influence others.

  • Ability to work at a fast pace and manage a fast-growing environment.

  • Strong communication skills, both written and verbal, to communicate both internal and external, as well as all levels of the organization.

  • Excellent organizational, analytical, planning, and problem-solving capabilities.
