In this newly created role for the Hawthorne Gardening Company (a subsidiary of Scotts Miracle-Gro), we are looking for a Director, Compensation who will join our Human Resources team. This role will be reporting to the SVP, Global Compensation & Benefits, and working closely with our VP, Human Resources.

You will be responsible for the compensation program operations, and the impact it has on the global enterprise. You will utilize your advanced knowledge of compensation programs and strategies, and in close collaboration with Human Resources partners, develop compensation solutions to help our business groups achieve their objectives. You will lead compensation programs, provide consultation and guidance, and drive the ongoing development and transformation of compensation programs for the enterprise as well as the business group's solutions.  

Proven experience directly leading compensation programs is key to your success in this role, but true success cannot be achieved without having a desire for problem-solving, the ability to face challenges head-on, developing creative solutions, and maintaining flexibility in all situations.  

What you’ll do in this role:

  • As a functional leader, you will collaborate with HR and business in the planning, development, implementation, and administration of compensation programs.

  • Understand the strategies, challenges, and opportunities of the business units you support, while maintaining an in-depth knowledge of the business's organizational structure, job functions, and skill requirements at each job level.

  • Leverage your working knowledge of the business to proactively develop compensation strategies that support the strategic and cultural objectives of the business.

  • Conduct financial impact analysis in cooperation with longer-term business planning processes.

  • Actively seek market intelligence; understand compensation trends for all functional roles and provide informed compensation solutions to your HR and business partners.

  • Ensure compensation programs are administered in a fair and equitable manner supported by company policies, applicable federal and state regulations or legislation, including applicable wage and hour regulations, and Data Privacy and Protection Guidelines.

  • Address and advise executive leadership with a clear and defined point of view while influencing the financial impact analysis data into relatable and compelling support to drive compensation initiatives.

  • Support the enterprise initiatives to drive continued education and transparency for all facets of compensation including coordination, communication, and execution of annual compensation activities, and advising management on compensation structures, programs, and specific actions for associates.

  • Partner with HR and the business to drive company-wide compensation change management, communications, and training.

  • Build strong partnerships and work collaboratively across all levels of the organization.

  • Be an objective listener who can leverage compensation experience and business savvy to drive creative solutions to meet business needs.

  • Manage complexity to deliver simple and actionable solutions.

  • Lead and influence in a matrixed organizational structure on key compensation topics.

What you’ll need to be successful:

  • Comfortability with leading, operating, and influencing in a matrixed environment.

  • Experience developing Hourly and Salaried compensation programs to meet the changing needs of the business and adapt to the competitive landscape.

  • Demonstrated knowledge of incentive plan practices and design, including commission-based programs

  • Proficiency with financial modeling and analytics to identify trends and root cause problems that lead to actionable solutions.

  • Possess the intellectual curiosity and “can do” mindset that proactively identifies opportunities, accepts challenges, and takes the initiative to find solutions that balance the needs of key stakeholders.

  • Experience with International pay practices, compensation design, and policies.

  • History of working with ex-pat and global mobility programs. Experience and knowledge working with federal & state regulations pertaining to compensation structure and design.

  • Strong Compliance background (FLSA, min-wage legislation, wage compliance, etc).

  • Effective project management and planning skills

  • Demonstrate flexibility to quickly adapt to changing priorities in a fast-paced work environment, while maintaining service commitments and quality.

  • Deep knowledge of HR Systems and related reporting (Workday experience is preferred).

  • Experience with compensation programs within the cannabis industry is preferred.

  • B.S. in business administration, accounting, finance, human resource management, or organizational development.

  • 10+ years of compensation experience with demonstrated increased responsibilities and achievement across various aspects of the compensation function.
